ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 – Lenovo’s new powerhouse

2023-06-08

As it does every year, Lenovo is once again updating the ThinkPad X1 Carbon series. The newest member of the family, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11, pays homage to the iconic ThinkPad design with durable carbon fibre motifs and significantly improved internals.

The latest Gen 11 arrives with the Intel® Evo™ mark, showing that Lenovo and Intel® collaboration is measurable in real results. The Evo™ name is not shared in vain – it’s only given to devices that deliver at least nine hours of continuous use after charging, have all the latest connectivity features, provide security with biometric authentication, guarantee impeccable video and audio quality, respond to screen wake-ups in less than a second, and so on.

While the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 deservedly boasts these benefits, it’s the significant increase in performance that is most impressive. From the previous generation with up to 32GB of internal memory, to the Gen 11 with a serious 64GB. What’s more, there’s still “legacy” space for SSDs, so the hard drive can hold up to 2TB. In other words, it’s worth a shake-up for those working on capacity-intensive tasks – video editing, editing, or large databases and projects become much more manageable.

In addition to a wide range of laptop memory options, there’s also a wide choice of display. The 14-inch display with the now-standard 16:10 aspect ratio is available in 300, 400 or 500 nits brightness, touch or non-touch, WUXGA, 2.2K or 2.8K resolution. All five options are 100% sRGB or DCI-P3, guaranteeing perfect colour reproduction. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 also continues Lenovo’s tradition of bringing safe, Eyesafe® certified blue vision-reducing displays to the market.

A number of improvements have been made to the camera and audio system, which are useful for remote workers. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 comes with several different camera options: an FHD RGB or FHD IR Hybrid camera with a physical shutter, and an FHD + IR MIPI camera with shutter and Computer Vision technology. Meanwhile, up to 4 Quad-Array microphones, Dolby® Atmos® and Dolby® Voice audio system ensure perfect call quality. The camera capabilities are greatly enhanced by the Lenovo View app. An advanced artificial intelligence algorithm allows it to remove backgrounds, automatically focus and track the speaker’s face, even in low-light conditions. Additionally, Privacy Guard and Privacy Alert prevent unwanted glances and remind you to correct your posture and take short breaks to rest your eyes.

ThinkPad business class also puts a lot of emphasis on security, from Intel vPro® solutions, a fingerprint scanner and camera shutter to presence detection. This ThinkPad has also improved cooling from the previous generation, with special technology designed to cool not only the bottom of the device but also the keyboard.

With the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 enhancements, Lenovo is moving ever closer to its lofty commitment to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Sustainability is measured in real numbers here, with as much as 90% recycled materials used for  keyboard casing and up to 55% recycled aluminium for the bottom. And the packaging is more sustainable too. There is no plastic at all, with bamboo, sugar cane fibre and other recycled and FSC-certified materials used for packaging.
